PURPOSE

Data privacy is focused on the use and governance of personal data, to ensure that personal information is being collected, shared, and used in appropriate ways, Proper handling storage, and usage of personal information are all data privacy concerns. It is all about the rights of individuals with respect to their personal information. Data privacy is different from data security, which focuses more on protecting data from malicious attacks and exploitation of stolen data for profit. Whereas data privacy is the right of individuals to have control over how their personal information is collected and used. While security is necessary for protecting data, it's insufficient for addressing privacy concerns.

Any company that uses IT systems to process personal data needs to have its employees trained in data protection, both to recognize and develop a sensitivity to handling personal information, and to ensure compliance with data protection regulations under state, federal, and international privacy laws. The primary focus of  this data privacy  training is on putting practices in place to ensure that peoples' personal information is being collected, shared, and used in appropriate ways.

New technologies mean more kinds of data are being collected. Customers need to trust that companies are handling their data responsibly and safely. Recent data breaches involving personally identifiable information clearly show the seriousness of this problem.
